ROJO

11.10.2024

The exhibition "ROJO" aims to explore the symbolic and visceral power of the color red, a color that has always evoked the most intense and profound emotions of the human soul. Since the dawn of time, red has represented vitality and strength, desire and passion, but also rebellion, struggle, power, and death. In ROJO, this color becomes the protagonist, a key to interpretation that artists have used to tell stories of conflict, love, suffering, and hope. Red, above all, is the color of blood, and therefore of life itself. From Francis Bacon, who used it to express the brutality and fragility of the human condition, to Mark Rothko, whose red color fields explore spirituality and transcendence, each artist invites the viewer to confront the essence of red as a primordial symbol of life and death. Red is passion and love, it is flesh, it is warmth; but it is also the fire that burns, the pain that tears apart, the heart that pulses with unstoppable emotions like suffering or unattainable desire. Pablo Picasso's works during his "rose period" represent the melancholy and emotional intensity of romantic relationships, while Henri Matisse's works play with the energy of red to depict the vitality and beauty of love in all its forms. Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's obsession with red transforms it into a hypnotic visual force, culminating in a psychological cycle of desire and repetition.

Red in ROJO also represents the force of rebellion and revolution. Always used as a symbol of struggle and change, red becomes the color of resistance and popular power. Kazimir Malevich, with his "Red Square," used this color to communicate his rejection of tradition and his push towards a new and revolutionary art. Red is associated with power and royalty, a color that has always symbolized authority and dominance. In this context, great artists of the past like Diego Velázquez immortalized regal and powerful figures draped in red garments, communicating the majesty and sacredness of power. Today, artists like Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer use red provocatively to speak about control and oppression, encouraging the public to reflect on the ambivalence of a color that can represent both power and the danger it entails. But red is also the color of rebirth, of the fire that purifies and regenerates, bringing new life and new possibilities. Red as a symbol of resurrection, the transformation of pain into strength, and the ability to rise from the ashes. Artists like Anish Kapoor use red to evoke sensations of spiritual and physical rebirth, pushing the viewer to confront the concept of regeneration. ROJO is not just a visual exhibition, but an experience that engages emotions, urging participants to reflect on their own relationship with red, on how this primordial color has always been part of our lives, our conflicts, and our passions. ROJO celebrates the color red not only as an aesthetic symbol but as a manifestation of the human condition: full of contrasts, passions, and struggles, revealing itself in its complexity and depth, and offering the visitor a powerful and vibrant glimpse of what it means to be alive.
